How to measure a bench cushion
To measure a bench cushion you need just three numbers: the length of the bench top, the depth front-to-back, and the thickness you want (2–3″ is standard for seating). Measure the bench surface itself with a straight tape, round to the nearest ¼ inch, decide whether you want a flush edge or a small overhang, and enter the figures in the customizer.

Measuring a bench cushion — answered
How thick should a bench cushion be?
For a seating bench, 2 to 3 inches of high-density foam is the sweet spot. Slim window and mudroom benches often use 2 inches, while a bench you lounge on can go up to 4 inches. You choose the exact thickness in the customizer.
Should the cushion match the bench size exactly?
For a built-in bench set between walls, measure the opening and subtract about a quarter inch so the cushion drops in without buckling. For a free-standing bench, match the top exactly or add half an inch of overhang at the front for comfort.
My bench isn't a perfect rectangle — what do I do?
Measure the length at both the front and the back edge. If they differ by more than a quarter inch the bench is tapered or angled, so choose a trapezoid or angled shape in the customizer and enter each edge rather than a plain rectangle.
How do I measure an L-shaped or corner bench?
Treat it as two rectangles that meet at the corner. Measure the length and depth of each leg, then note which corner is shared. Our L-shaped option builds it as one continuous cushion. See our L-shaped measuring guide for detail.
What's the best foam for a bench you sit on daily?
High-density foam gives firm, supportive seating that holds its shape for years, ideal for daily-use dining and entry benches. Softer fiberfill suits decorative or occasional benches. Both are options in the customizer.
