Foam density guide
Foam density is the weight of one cubic foot of foam, measured in lb/ft³ (or kg/m³), and it tells you how durable the foam is — not how firm it feels. Higher density lasts longer and resists sagging. For seating you want high-density foam of 1.8 lb/ft³ or more; lower densities are fine for backs and decorative cushions but wear out faster under daily use.

Foam density — answered
What is foam density?
Foam density is the weight of one cubic foot of foam, measured in lb/ft³ (or kg/m³). It reflects how much material is in the foam and therefore how durable it is — higher density resists sagging and lasts longer.
What foam density is best for seating?
High-density foam of 1.8–2.5 lb/ft³ is best for seat, bench and sofa cushions. It holds its shape under daily use, where lower densities compress and go flat within a few years.
Is higher density foam always firmer?
No. Density measures durability, not firmness. Firmness is measured by ILD/IFD. Two foams with the same density can feel soft or firm depending on their ILD rating.
What density is memory foam?
Memory foam is usually 3–5 lb/ft³, which is why it feels dense and slow to recover. That suits mattresses and toppers but not upright seating, where high-density polyurethane foam performs better.
How long does high-density foam last?
High-density foam (1.8–2.5 lb/ft³) typically lasts 7–12 years in daily-use cushions, compared with 1–5 years for low- and medium-density foam.
