How to Measure an L-Shaped Cushion
To measure an L-shaped cushion, treat the corner seat as two rectangles that share a corner. Measure the full length of the long leg, the full depth of the short leg, the width and depth of the empty corner notch, and the thickness you want. Then check that the inside corner is square, because a corner that is slightly off is easy to miss.

What do I need before I start?
- A rigid carpenter's tape, not a soft cloth tape.
- A carpenter's square, or a hardback book with a true square corner.
- Paper and a pencil for a sketch, and your phone for photos.
Which five numbers do I need?
Sketch the bench from above and label five measurements. Measure each one three times along its length and keep the smallest reading, because walls are rarely perfectly straight.

C and D together fix where the inside corner turns. If you leave them out, the cushion can only be made as a plain rectangle.
How do I check the inside corner?
Set the carpenter's square, or the corner of the book, into the inside corner where the two legs meet. Both edges should sit flush against the front edges of the bench. If you see a gap, the corner is not square: note it on your sketch and send a photo of the square in place. For a corner that is clearly off, trace it on paper with the template method.
One piece or two?
You can order an L-shaped cushion as one piece that follows the corner, or as two pieces that meet at the corner. Measure the same five numbers either way and say which you want.
Snug fit or overhang?
For a built-in banquette, measure the opening wall to wall and send the exact numbers; we confirm the allowance during the free size check. For a free-standing corner bench, measure the top and tell us if you want a small overhang at the front.
Which mistakes should I avoid?
- Measuring outside corner to outside corner around the bench. Measure the top surface only.
- Assuming the corner is square. Always check it.
- Rounding up "to be safe". Send the real numbers.
- Measuring an old cushion instead of the bench.
- Forgetting the notch (C and D).
What should I send?
- A photo of your sketch with A, B, C, D and E labelled.
- A photo of the square in the inside corner, or a note that it sat flush.
- Your five numbers in one unit, inches or centimetres.
