How to recover cushions

Made-to-measure replacement cushion covers by Foamera

To recover a cushion, carefully unpick the old cover and use its panels as a pattern, cut new fabric with a half-inch seam allowance, sew a boxed cover with a zipper, then slide the existing foam back in. It's the most affordable refresh when your foam is still firm and only the fabric is worn. If the foam has gone flat or lumpy, replace it at the same time — a fresh cover on dead foam won't feel new.

Recovering cushions — answered

Can I recover a cushion without replacing the foam?

Yes — if the foam still springs back and holds its shape, a new cover is all you need and it's the most economical refresh. Only replace the foam if it has gone flat, crumbly or uneven, because a new cover won't restore lost support.

How much fabric do I need to recover a cushion?

Measure the top, bottom and boxing (side) panels and add a half-inch seam allowance to each. As a rough guide, a standard seat cushion needs about 1.5 to 2 yards of 54-inch fabric; large or patterned fabrics that need matching require more.

Do I need a zipper in the new cover?

A zipper is strongly recommended — it lets you remove the cover for washing and makes inserting the foam far easier. Put it along the back boxing strip so it's hidden in use.

Is it worth recovering old cushions?

It's worth it when the frame and foam are still good and you want a fresh look for less than new furniture. If the foam is dead and the fabric shot, ordering a complete made-to-measure cushion is often better value than buying materials and sewing.

Can I get a cover made instead of sewing it myself?

Yes. You can order a made-to-measure cover to fit your existing foam, or a complete cushion. Send your measurements and Foamera prices it instantly and ships worldwide with free shipping.
