What foam should I use for a DIY bench cushion?
Use high-density polyurethane foam for seating — it holds its shape and supports weight for years. For a bench you lounge on, 3–4 inches is comfortable; for a slim window or mudroom bench, 2 inches is enough. Wrap it in Dacron batting for soft, rounded edges.
Is it easier to make a bench cushion or order custom?
Once you add up sourcing foam, fabric, a zipper, batting and notions, DIY takes several hours of sewing. DIY wins mainly when you already own a machine, enjoy the project and the shape is a simple rectangle; otherwise a custom-made cushion is faster and fits exactly.
How hard is it to sew a boxed bench cushion?
A straight rectangle is a good intermediate project: mostly long straight seams plus a zipper. L-shaped, curved or trapezoid cushions are much harder to cut and sew accurately, which is where a custom maker with the right patterns saves the most frustration.
