How to Measure a Window Seat Cushion

Custom window seat nook cushion handcrafted by Foamera

To measure a window seat cushion, measure the seat opening width wall-to-wall at the front and the back, the depth from the window to the front edge, and the thickness you want (2–3″ is typical). Because window seats sit in a recess, subtract about ¼–½″ from the width so the cushion drops in without wedging, and for a bay window measure each angled section separately.

Window seat cushions — answered

Should a window seat cushion be smaller than the opening?

Yes. Because the seat sits in a recess, subtract about a quarter to half an inch from the wall-to-wall width so the finished cushion drops in without wedging against the walls. Match the depth to the sill or leave a small front overhang.

How do I measure a bay window seat?

A bay seat is usually three sections: a straight front and two angled returns. Measure each section separately and note the angles where they meet. You can order one shaped cushion that follows the bay or three cushions that butt together.

The recess is not perfectly square — what should I do?

Measure the width at both the front and the back of the recess and check the corners with a set square. If the walls are not parallel, give us both widths and we taper the cushion so it follows the actual shape rather than a plain rectangle.

How thick should a window seat cushion be?

For a firm, comfortable reading seat, 2 to 3 inches of high-density foam works well. Slim sills sometimes use 2 inches to keep the sightline low. You choose the exact thickness in the customizer.

What if the sill has a lip, and how long does it take?

Measure to the usable seating area only, stopping at any grille, lip or trim the cushion should not cover, and send a photo with a tape. Each cushion is made to order and shipped worldwide with free tracked delivery, with the lead time shown at checkout, backed by a 14-day perfect-fit guarantee.
