Foam Density, ILD, and Firmness: A Plain-English Guide
Every cushion conversation arrives at the word firm within thirty seconds. "I want it firm. Firm enough to sit on. Not too firm." Reasonable sentence. Almost useless as a spec.
Firmness is how a cushion feels the moment you sit. Density is what decides whether it still feels that way in year three, five, ten. Two cushions can feel identical on day one and live entirely different lives — one holds shape through a decade, the other goes flat by its second summer. The difference is rarely the cover. It is the foam.
This guide unpacks what density and firmness measure, and how to pick the right foam for where you will sit.
Density and firmness are not the same thing
The trap: density is weight per volume, firmness is push-back. Two independent measurements.
Density is how much foam is packed into one cubic meter, reported in kg/m³. A 40 kg/m³ foam has 40 kilograms of polymer in every cubic meter. The rest is air. More density, more durability. Density is a proxy for how long the cushion keeps its shape. Firmness is measured by ILD — Indentation Load Deflection. A 12-inch disc presses into a 4-inch block until it compresses 25%, and the force required (in pounds) is the ILD. Low ILD sinks easily. High ILD resists. Firmness is how the cushion feels when you sit.You can have soft, dense foam (luxurious, long-lasting) or firm, low-density foam (stiff at first, then collapses). The cheap trick is selling the second and letting you confuse "firm" for "good."
What the density numbers actually mean
Think in brackets. Each is a use case, not a grade.
- ~28 kg/m³ — commodity foam. Budget inserts, decorative pillows, rental furniture. Lifespan under daily seating: one to two years before visible sag. Fine for a cushion no one sits on.
- 30 to 35 kg/m³ — HR (High Resiliency). The reliable middle. Occasional seating, back cushions, second-row dining chairs. Lifespan: three to five years.
- 35 to 45 kg/m³ — HD (High Density). The working foam of any cushion built to be used. Sofa seats, primary dining chairs, window seats. Lifespan: seven to ten years with shape intact.
- 50+ kg/m³ — premium and contract-grade. Hotel lobbies, heavy-use benches, floor cushions. Still looks new after a decade of strangers.
The ILD scale, mapped to how it feels
ILD ranges are more standardized than people assume:
- ILD 15 to 20 — Soft. Back cushions, throw pillows, cozy floor seating. Sinks noticeably, contours around the body.
- ILD 25 to 30 — Medium. Everyday feel. Dining chairs, bench cushions, window seats. Firm enough to stand up from, soft enough to linger.
- ILD 35 to 45 — Firm. Sofa seats holding shape under long sessions, deep-seat cushions, support-oriented backs.
- ILD 50 to 65 — Extra Firm. Outdoor seating, commercial benches, orthopedic use. A deliberate, plank-like sit.
Picking by where you will sit
Dining chair. Upright posture, frequent getting up. HD 40 kg/m³, ILD 30 to 35, 4 to 5 cm thick. Firm enough that you do not sink into your soup, dense enough that chair three does not look flatter than chair one by year two. Sofa seat. The hardest cushion to get right because it gets the most use. HD 40 to 45 kg/m³ minimum, ILD 32 to 40, 10 to 14 cm thick. If someone streams television four hours a night, do not go below 40 kg/m³. Bench cushion. Sits unused most of the day then takes sudden weight. HD 35 to 40 kg/m³, ILD 30 to 35, 5 to 8 cm thick. Dense enough to resist the spot where one person always lands. Floor cushion. Full body weight, no frame underneath. This is where density earns its money. 45 to 50 kg/m³, ILD 30 to 40, 12 to 18 cm thick. Skimp here and you will feel the floor inside a year. Back cushion. Opposite philosophy: softness matters more than support. HR 28 to 32 kg/m³, ILD 18 to 25, plus fiber wrap. Hugs the lower back rather than pushing it. Outdoor. Different rules entirely. Reticulated quick-dry foam (open-cell, drains water) at 30 to 35 kg/m³, ILD 30 to 40. Density matters less — UV and moisture are the real enemies. A 28 kg/m³ seat used daily loses 20 to 40 percent of its height and firmness within three years. By year five it is a slab.
A 40 kg/m³ cushion in the same spot loses under ten percent in three years and still works comfortably at year seven. A 50 kg/m³ cushion in contract use is rated for ten years of public seating — a brutal duty cycle.
The price gap between 28 and 40 kg/m³ foam is typically 30 to 50 percent. The lifespan gap is 300 to 500 percent. Clearest value math in the category, and somehow the least talked-about.
The fiber-wrap trick
A dense foam core feels supportive but — alone — slightly hard to the palm. The fix upholsterers have used for decades: a thin wrap of polyester fiber batting (Dacron fiberfill) around the foam, 1 to 4 cm thick.
It adds loft, rounds the edges, gives that just-fluffed look. It does not add support — the foam underneath does all the structural work.
This solves the false choice. You do not have to pick between "firm enough to last" and "soft enough to love." Dense foam plus fiber wrap gives both — a supportive core with a pillowy hand. It is why a good sofa feels generous and a cheap one feels like a gym mat.
Pulling it together
A cushion is a stack of choices: density, firmness, fiber wrap, cover tension, internal structure. Get density right and the rest becomes tuning. Get it wrong and no cover will save it.
One takeaway: ask for the kg/m³ number. Any maker worth ordering from answers instantly. Anyone who hedges is selling commodity foam in a nicer wrapper.
