WHY FOAMERA FOR BENCHES

Long, slim, exact — the way a bench should be.

Tailored to the length, the depth, and how you'll use it.

Continuous fit

One cushion the full length of the bench — no awkward seams, no shifting cushions, no gaps at the ends.

Slim 1.5"–3" profile

Bench cushions live in tight rooms — slim enough to clear table aprons, padded enough for a long dinner.

Tied or non-slip

Discreet ties at the back legs, or a non-slip backing for benches without uprights. Cushion stays put.

Indoor & outdoor

Linen and cotton for the dining bench. Solution-dyed performance weaves for the garden bench.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Bench cushions, answered.

The questions bench owners ask us most. Anything else, the atelier is one message away.

  • What's the standard bench cushion thickness?

For a dining bench, 1.5"–2" of high-density foam is right — enough padding to enjoy a long meal, slim enough to clear the table apron when the bench tucks under. For a mudroom or hallway bench, 2.5"–3" reads more substantial and is gentler on long sits while pulling boots on. Garden benches: 3" with quick-dry foam. Tell us the use and we'll suggest.

  • My bench has multiple legs — should the cushion split or stay one piece?

For benches under 72" we make one continuous cushion regardless of legs — it ships flat and lays beautifully. Past 72" we'll split into two equal pieces with a hidden seam line, because a single 80"+ cushion gets floppy at the ends and is awkward to lift for cleaning. Tell us the bench length and we'll recommend.

  • Open-back or closed-back bench — does it matter?

For backless benches (most dining and mudroom benches), the cushion is the entire seating surface — measure width and depth, we cut to fit. For benches with a back rail (like a settle or church pew), we measure to where the cushion meets the back rail and finish the back edge with a clean welted seam so it sits flush against the wood. Photograph the bench from the side and we'll plan the right edge treatment.

  • Where should the ties be placed?

Standard for a backless bench: two pairs of ties at the back corners, wrapping under and tying around the rear legs. For a bench with a back rail, ties go at the back wrapping the rail. For benches with no uprights at all (a tree-stump bench, a stone bench), we use a non-slip rubberised backing instead. Tell us the bench style and we'll choose.

  • What fabric handles heavy daily use?

For mudroom and entry benches — where boots, dogs, school bags and groceries pile up — we recommend a performance weave rated 50,000+ Martindale rubs (Crypton, Sunbrella, Revolution). They look like linen, wear like canvas. For the dining bench, a tightly woven cotton or cotton-linen blend handles spills if treated. We'll tag the heavy-use options in your swatch box.

  • Are these safe with pets and small children?

Yes — when paired with the right fabric. Performance weaves resist claw pulls, are washable, and use no harmful finishes. Foam cores are CertiPUR-certified (no formaldehyde, no phthalates, low VOC). The hidden zipper means covers come off for a deep wash if anything spills. Mention pets/kids when ordering and we'll bias the swatch selection toward the most resilient fabrics.
