Floor cushions, answered.

• How firm should a floor cushion be?

  Firmer than you think. A floor cushion has to hold an adult's weight without bottoming out onto the hardwood — and a soft cushion that compresses to two inches is just an expensive way to sit on the floor. Our standard floor cushion uses 2.5 lb high-density foam, which feels supportive but not hard. For meditation cushions you might want firmer still (zafu-style); tell us in the notes and we'll bump density. For kids' reading nooks, the standard works well.

• Are the materials safe for kids?

  Yes. Our foam is CertiPUR certified — low-VOC, no heavy metals, no formaldehyde, no toxic flame retardants. Most of our recommended kids'-room fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified, meaning they've been tested for harmful substances at every stage of production. There may be a faint new-foam smell for a day; air the cushion in a ventilated room and it clears. We'd put any of these cushions in our own kids' rooms and do.

• Will the cushion slide on hardwood floors?

  Without a non-slip base, a smooth-bottomed floor cushion does slide — particularly the round meditation kind on polished hardwood. The fix is our optional rubberised underside, a thin grip layer sewn into the cover bottom. It holds firm on hardwood, tile and even short-pile rugs without scratching the floor or staining the rug. Add it in the configurator's extras step. For most living-room use it's a worthwhile upgrade.

• Round, square, or Moroccan?

  It's mostly an aesthetic call. Round (zafu and zabuton style) reads meditation, calm, traditional — perfect for yoga corners and low coffee-table seating. Square Moroccan-style poufs (stuffed taut, often piped, sometimes leather) read pattern-rich and global. Oversized rectangles work for low-lounge floor cushions paired with a coffee table at floor level. We make all three; mix and match in a single order for matched-fabric sets.

• Are the covers washable?

  The covers unzip from the cushion. Whether you can wash them depends on the fabric you choose: outdoor and most performance fabrics are cold-wash safe on delicate, inside out, air-dried flat. Indoor linens and velvets should be spot-cleaned only — they can shift dye in a wash. The product confirmation includes a care card listing exactly what to do for the fabric you picked. Never machine-wash foam or fill; only the cover.

• Indoor only, or outdoor too?

  Both — depending on which fabric you choose. Pick an outdoor-grade performance fabric and the cushion lives happily on a covered porch, sunroom, or garden bench. Pick an indoor linen or velvet and it should stay inside. The foam type also matters: dry-fast outdoor foam for outside use, standard high-density for inside. • What sizes do you make?

  Our standard floor cushion sizes are 24 × 24 inches (single child or footstool), 28 × 28 (single adult), 36 × 36 (lounger or small adult two-person), and 48 × 48 (oversized lounge). For round meditation cushions, 16 to 20 inches in diameter is typical. Anything bigger or smaller, just measure your space and order to size — we cut to your exact dimensions, not a fixed catalogue.
