GOOD QUESTIONS

Indoor cushions, answered.

The questions homeowners and renters ask us most.

  • Can I use indoor cushions on a covered porch?

Carefully — and not really. "Indoor" fabrics aren't engineered for UV exposure or humidity, and a covered porch sees both. Linens and indoor cottons fade visibly within a season of indirect sun, and any moisture overnight invites mildew. If your porch is fully enclosed and climate-controlled (essentially a sunroom with windows), indoor fabrics work. If it's truly an open porch with weather reaching it, go outdoor-grade performance fabric — same softness now, but it'll still look right in five years.

  • What fabric works for a high-traffic indoor sofa?

Look for performance indoor fabrics: Aquaclean linens (stain-release finish, water-clean), Crypton blends (commercial-grade durability), and the higher-rub-rated bouclés (40,000+ Martindale). Avoid pure linen (beautiful, fades and shows wear), pure velvet on a daily-use sofa (crushes), and natural cotton without finish (stains permanently). For a young-family living room, an Aquaclean linen-look is hard to beat. Browse filtered by indoor performance.

  • How do I measure a window-seat nook?

Window seats are tricky because the recess is rarely square. Measure the back length (wall to wall along the rear), the front length (often 1-2 inches shorter because of trim), the depth at the left, the depth at the right, and the depth at the centre. If those numbers vary, the seat is trapezoidal, not rectangular — important for fit. Photograph the seat from above with a tape laid corner to corner; we can pattern from your photo. Video calls also free if you'd rather walk through it.

  • Memory foam or high-density — which feels better?

Different feel, different use. Memory foam contours to your body and reduces pressure points — excellent for long sit-down sessions like reading nooks, theatre seats, hospital-grade chairs. The trade-off is heat retention (sleeps warm) and slightly slower spring-back. High-density foam is the workshop default — supportive, neutral-temperature, fast-recovery, lasts longer. For most living rooms and dining benches, HD foam is the right answer. Reserve memory foam for places you sit for an hour at a time.

  • How do I clean a tufted cushion?

Tufting traps dirt where the buttons compress the fabric, so vacuum thoroughly with a brush attachment to lift surface dust before it sets. For spot cleaning, blot (don't rub) with a quarter cup of mild soap in a gallon of lukewarm water, working around — not over — the buttons. For deep cleaning, send to an upholstery cleaner; home machine cleaning can warp the buttons or shift the foam. The product care card lists the exact method for your fabric.

  • Are these safe for pets and kids?

Yes, with the right fabric. Crypton, Aquaclean and Revolution blends are stain-release engineered for muddy paws and spilled juice — most accidents wipe up with water. Our foam is CertiPUR certified (low-VOC, no harmful flame retardants). Avoid pure velvet and bouclé on cushions a toddler will use daily; they look beautiful for a season, then start showing every drag mark. Suggest pet/kid-friendly cloths in the library by filter.

  • Can I add a non-slip backing to indoor cushions?

Yes — and it's worth it for any cushion sitting on a smooth-finished bench or chair. Our optional rubberised underside grips lacquered wood, leather and rattan without scratching the surface. It's a thin layer sewn into the cover bottom (you won't see it from above) and adds a small upgrade fee. For loose seat cushions on dining benches, fabric ties at the back corners are an alternative — they tie around the chair frame. Pick either or both in the configurator.
