GOOD QUESTIONS

Majlis cushions, answered.

The questions hosts and designers ask us most. Anything else, the atelier is one message away.

  • What are the standard majlis cushion dimensions?

Traditional Khaleeji majlis seat cushions run roughly 80–100 cm long by 60–70 cm deep, at 12–15 cm thick (4.5"–6"). Back cushions are taller and slimmer — typically 60 cm wide by 50–60 cm tall, around 12 cm thick. Bolsters are cylindrical, 18–22 cm diameter, the full length of the seat. We make all of these to standard or custom dimensions — send your floor space measurements and we'll lay out a suite that fits.

  • How many bolsters does a typical majlis set need?

Two bolsters at the head and foot of each seat segment is the most common layout — they define the ends and give an arm to lean against. For a continuous L-shape majlis along two walls, you'd want a bolster at each open end (so two bolsters total even if the seating runs 6 metres). Many clients add intermediate bolsters every 2–3 metres for more leaning points. Tell us your floor plan and we'll suggest a count.

  • What tasseling and trim options are available?

We carry classic four-corner tassels in matched or contrast colours, gold or silver bullion fringe along the front edge, twisted-cord piping in any of 40+ shades, and embroidered borders for a more traditional aesthetic. For more formal majlis settings: hand-attached crystal-bead tassels and metallic-thread piping are available on request. Send us a reference image of the look you want and we'll quote.

  • Can the cushions sit directly on the floor or do I need a platform?

Both work. Floor-direct cushions need a non-slip backing (we add a rubberised mesh underlay as standard for majlis pieces) so they don't migrate during a long gathering. Platform-mounted cushions sit on a low wood frame, typically 10–15 cm high — gives the majlis more presence in the room and protects the cushion bottoms from floor wear. Photograph your space and we'll suggest.

  • Do you offer custom embroidery — names, family crests, geometric motifs?

Yes — we work with embroiderers who handle Arabic calligraphy, family monograms, geometric patterns, and traditional Khaleeji motifs. Send the artwork (vector preferred, but a clean photo works) and tell us where on the cushion it should sit (centre face, corner, all four corners). Embroidery adds to lead time — typically 2 extra weeks. Quoted per piece.

  • Traditional silk-jacquard or modern velvet — which suits my majlis?

Traditional Khaleeji style leans into woven silk jacquards (intricate damask-style patterns, often gold-on-cream or burgundy-on-gold), Damascene weaves, and silk velvets in deep jewel tones. Modern majlis aesthetics favour solid-coloured velvets, linen-cotton blends in muted earth tones, and minimal trim. Both are fully represented in our library — order swatches in both directions and decide in your room's light.
